About
I am pleased to join the team of providers at Joy of Medicine. I am a clinical psychologist with experience in a variety of settings, including community clinics, a drug prevention program, a maximum-security prison and an HMO where I collaborated with teams of medical colleagues to provide skillful, effective mental health services. I have been in private practice since 2012 and enjoy working with people from various cultures and many walks of life. I have worked well with people who hold a variety of positions in healthcare systems. I specialize in treating adults experiencing work stress, life transitions, grief, trauma, depression and anxiety. I have specialized training and experience working with people in the LGBTQI community. I have also been evaluating veterans since 2013 and provided pro-bono psychotherapy services to veterans and their families for many years. This work affords me a particular understanding of the stressors faced by veterans and their family members.
Services
My therapeutic approach is generally grounded in psychodynamic and system theories; however, I tailor my interventions to a client’s presenting problems and treatment goals. A compassionate, non-judgmental approach is central to my work. Clinical psychology is a second career for me. I worked in business for 20 years in both small and international companies. This experience gives me a unique understanding of the power dynamics often associated with high stress work environments similar to those experienced by physicians and other healthcare providers. Learning effective strategies to navigate those dynamics and better understand co-workers and management can alleviate interpersonal stress and facilitate a more satisfying work environment. I have practiced taiji quan since 1983 and often utilize principles from that practice when working with clients, including teaching people how to transform adverse energy to both increase your own sense of safety and be intentional about the energy you are contributing to a relationship, whether personal or work related. This practice has also been first hand evidence of the importance of behavioral interventions designed to alleviate work and life stress.
